2009 Child of Appalachia® Honorees

Ambassador and Mrs. Ong
Ambassador John D. Ong is the former Chairman & CEO of BFGoodrich Company, and was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to Kingdom of Norway by President George W. Bush and served from 2001 to 2005. Throughout his careers, Ambassador Ong has been a leader for business involvement in civic and cultural activities, both nationally and in Ohio. 

Mrs. Mary Lee Ong has served as an Ohio University Trustee and is also an Ohio University graduate. Both Ambassador and Mrs. Ong are natives of Tuscarawas County. Ambassador Ong was born in Uhrichsville, which adjoins Dennison, the birthplace of Mrs. Ong.

Ora E. Anderson
Naturalist Ora Anderson was passionate about conservation and committed to preserving the natural beauty of Appalachian Ohio. Anderson’s dedication dated back to the 1930s, when he was a young reporter and editor covering the establishment of the Wayne National Forest. Anderson was also a keen observer of nature, authoring several essays and poems in addition to being an expert woodcarver of the birds he saw.

Directions to the Celebration

The reception will start at 4:30 p.m. at the Historic Dennison Railroad Depot Museum in Dennison, Ohio. Guests will be shuttled from the reception to the program at Claymont Intermediate and then returned to the Depot upon the conclusion of the program.

FROM THE SOUTH:
Take I-77 North to Newcomerstown, and then take US 36 East to the Dennison exit.
Take Dennison exit and turn right onto Second Street. Follow Second Street until you reach the railroad tracks, and then turn left onto Center Street. You will see the Dennison Depot two blocks ahead on your right. On-street parking is available on side streets near the
Dennison Depot.

FROM THE NORTH:
